Depression

In our society, depression is a common mental illness with a big reputation. It is estimated that 1 in 15 adults experience depression in an average year, and 1 in 6 adults experience depression at least once in their lifetime.

Depression describes a condition where feelings of sadness and a lack of interest in pleasurable activities interfere with an individual's ability to live a thriving lifestyle. Alongside these symptoms, individuals with depression experience changes in appetite and weight, insomnia or oversleeping, lack of energy, a feeling of purposelessness or lack of meaning, a feeling of worthlessness, difficulty thinking and concentrating, and suicidal thinking. These symptoms can all range from mild to severe, and generally must be experienced for an extended amount of time to indicate depression.

Depression also appears in different forms, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), referred to as seasonal or winter depression. Seasonal Affective Disorder tends to occur during the fall/winter season due to the reduction of sunlight. The lack of sunlight is linked to a biochemical imbalance in the brain which onsets various depressive symptoms. For people in the United States, SAD is experienced most often in January and February. The symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder are legitimate, as they impair an individual’s ability to lead a normal, healthy lifestyle. Seasonal Affective Disorder can be treated through light therapy, medications, and/or talk therapy. Colorado CBT is a top clinic in Denver where individuals can find treatment for their SAD.

While depression has numerous effects on a person’s wellbeing, it highly impacts self-esteem. Self-esteem is the way that we think of ourselves, or how we “like ourselves.” Ongoing negative self-esteem can onset depression, and depression worsens self-esteem, creating a harmful cycle. Getting out of a negative self-esteem belief can be challenging without the support of a healthcare professional. Low self-esteem creates mental health vulnerability, and therefore should be addressed immediately!

Depression is more than simply being sad and hopeless for a few days. We are all liable for a few down days every now and then. Depression is a debilitating condition that impairs quality of life and luckily, can be treated. Most people, over 80 percent, respond positively to the treatment they seek out for their depression. Truly, depression can happen in anyone’s life, regardless of how perfect it may seem on the surface. Depression can be caused by various factors. Brain chemicals and imbalances may contribute to creating depression symptoms, as do family genetics. Those who have a history of depression in their family are much more likely to experience it. The bottom line is that depression is a common condition and can happen to anyone, no matter their story.
